Moving South: How it Began

October 19th, 2007

[Note: The closing of our house is tentatively set for the end of the month, so I thought I'd do a little series on "The Move".]

How did our move begin?

Well, I suppose it began the same way the Westward expansion began, as a desire. The desire for more land, less government regulation, better cost of living, less taxes, etc. In our area of NY, many folks talk about moving South, but few consider it anything more than a dream. In our family, Mom (the adventurous one), had always wanted to move, but Dad (Mr. Slow and Steady) preferred to stick it out here.

That all changed in the Spring of last year. Read the rest of this entry »

Pastor Appreciation Dayhiking…rehearsals, and the Pride and Prejudice play…having fun with guests…Busy, busy, busy! But do the Willi stop there? Nay! These next few weeks are packed with non-stop action, busyness, and fun; a time to enjoy the company of family and friends, and to work on necessary moving preparations. Yes sir, it’s going to be a bumpy, but fun ride! Without further ado, I present to you A peek into the Willis’ schedule….

Jamestown 400 Encore

October 15th, 2007

Well, it’s been a touch of old times here at the Willi house. We received the official induction into the “Order of the Jamestown 400″! Needless to say, we are all super excited!

Annnnnndd, there’s Morse code around the edge of the coin…. Time for the rusty sleuths to get back into shape!

Update: It turns out that Vision Forum has just released the 2008 catalogue. And, we can say from personal experience, that there are definitely some new clues in there!

The Vision Forum 2008 Catalogue

The Willi are kicking back into sleuthing gear…. At least, temporarily! :)

Update: Well, we cruised for a while, then hit a brick wall. Gahhh! I can’t take staring at the computer screen much longer. Must…..have……hard…..copy…….

Fun with the Donavons

October 15th, 2007

We were blessed to host out-of-towners this weekend, who drove over three hours to see our play last night (don’t worry, a report and pictures will be posted soon), some of the many friends we had made in Jamestown! The Donavon family were one of the three finalists in the Jamestown 400 Treasure Hunt; I was excited to discover a fellow Pride and Prejudice fan in Elizabeth Donavon, and on the last day of the celebration, we conversed quite a bit on the subject.

A few emails were sent between our families over the course of the summer to keep each other updated on recent news. When we told the Donavons about our play, they expressed a desire to come see it, and to our great surprise, followed through with that wish and drove all the way from Binghamton! We convinced them to be our guests, and spent a short but wonderful time in each other’s company. After all the excitement with the play (which, Elizabeth later told me that they had enjoyed it very much) we stayed up late into the night, talking about virtually anything, browsing through family pictures, sharing stories, and reminiscing about our experiences in Jamestown. Fellowship with Believers is so sweet!

The next day we decided to do some sight seeing in Hyde Park, and spent most of our Saturday at Val Kill, the home of Eleanor Roosevelt. These pictures are all from that day, taken as we talked, hiked, toured, and had an altogether delightful day! Thank you Donavons, for such a lovely visit!

Pastor Appreciation

October 10th, 2007

October is commonly known among churches as Pastor Appreciation Month. In all the years that we’ve been with our dear little church, we’ve always cooked up something special for our pastor and his family; a vacation, collaborative gifts, surprise parties, etc… This year we planned a potluck, and surprised our pastor’s family towards the end with our many cards, thank-yous, and presents. It was so special! The party was spent indoors, outdoors, in conversation, or indulging in pine cone wars and climbing trees. :-) What a blessed time we had! However, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves, and you’ll see what I mean.

We love you Holmes family and church!

Storm King Mountain

October 9th, 2007

The sale of our house will probably occur near the end of the month, the Pride and Prejudice play looms dangerously near, and what do we do?

Go hiking, of course!

Monday was a bright and glorious day, not to mention warm (86 degrees!). It was a great hike – just long and vigorous enough to make it a bit tiring, but short enough so as not to be exhausting. We almost got lost with our pathetically outdated map, but praise the Lord, we were steered on the correct path by a friendly hiker.

Paul, Apostle Paul

October 8th, 2007

This is a funny “preview” for “Paul, Apostle Paul”. Even though I’ve never seen James Bond, I still enjoyed all the spoofs and jokes. It is a pretty short audio clip – only a couple minutes long. Listen to it by clicking the blue play button.

Enjoy! :)

Shamelessly recorded from an episode of Adventures in Odyssey.

An Embarrassing Moment :-)

October 6th, 2007

The phone rang; the display on its screen read something along the lines of Century 21.’ Hmm, curious indeed. Caller ID is awesome, but I still didn’t know exactly who our caller was. Being the brave, daring girl that I am, I picked up the receiver with a decided “Hello?”

“Hi, is this…?” – a man’s voice obviously, but I couldn’t quite make out what he said.

“No, this is the Willis family residence.” I replied slowly. There was something very familiar about this man…

“Oh, well I…”

Instantly, I recognized the voice – Read the rest of this entry »

A Missed Opportunity

October 5th, 2007

Sunlight streamed through the windows, brightly illuminating the living room. Various members of a family were seated on the futon couch, sinking into the plush blue seat, and swaying on the rocking chair. Two boys, two girls, and two parents –

Their name was the “Willi”.

The Bibles were opened, and family devotions were just ending. Suddenly, steps could be heard walking up the front porch, and they ended with a doorbell ring. The mother glanced at her watch. She was conscious of all the places she and her family had to be, and the million and one things that they had to do.

She opend the door. The lady outside smiled. “Hello, I’m with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. I’d like to share with you some scriptures of comfort. Are you religious?”

The mother quickly replied. “Yes, we’re religious, but we’re not interested. thanks.”

She closed the door, and sat back down on her rocking chair. For a moment, there was silence in the room. Each member of the family looked at each other, at the ticking clock on the shelf, at the open Bible on their lap. Soon, as one man, they turned to the window – but it was too late.

The lady was gone.

And those “million and one” things didn’t seem so important anymore.

May we always take advantage of the opportunities God gives us to share Him with others, and not let the busyness of life choke our voice.

For the Glory of God
Walter
