Exploring Boston

November 12th, 2007

Exploring Boston

Early Friday morning the Willi and Thomas family piled into a white 12-passenger van and set off for Boston. We spent our day exploring its historic sights and attractions, climbing the endless stairs of the Bunker Hill Monument (seemingly endless I should say, considering that I was so foolish as to try and run all the way up:D), touring the U.S. Constitution ship, the Old North Church (where lanterns were hung to determine the direction in which the British arrived) and driving down the tiny one-way streets of Boston – we had a ball!

[Note from Walter] 5 boys (of divers ages and sizes) + 1 van bench = absolute cramped hilarity!

[Admin Note] Captions/descriptions coming whenever we find internet time….. :)

Go to http://grandadventure2.blogspot.com for more info (and better pics) of our trip! Coming soon, “Exploring Plymouth”, and “Fun with the Thomases”.

I admit, I’m still in a Pride and Prejudice mood, and might as well accept the fact that I will be for the rest of my life. :-) I just love Pride and Prejudice, and I can’t get enough of it! So I took the quiz, and found that I am closest in personality to…Miss Elizabeth Bennett.

“Miss Elizabeth Bennett? I am all astonishment! Pray, how long has she been a favorite, and when may I wish you joy?”

-Caroline Bingley to Mr. Darcy, in Pride and Prejudice

Cast to perfection in our Pride and Prejudice play I suppose, but that’s no real surprise to me, and many others who know me well. I have long noted the similarity in characters between myself and Miss Bennett.

“We are each of an unsocial, taciturn disposition, both unwilling to speak unless we expect to say something that will amaze the whole room.”

-Elizabeth Bennett to Mr. Darcy

It was rather incredible to be acting out one’s self (or almost one’s self) in said Pride and Prejudice play; it was actually harder than it appeared, but in the end Lizzie and I got on first rate.

However, just to make sure I am indeed Miss Elizabeth Bennett (and for fun), I took another quiz…a Jane Austin Heroine quiz, and once again…

I am Elizabeth Bennet!
Take the Quiz here!

You are Elizabeth Bennet of Pride & Prejudice! You are intelligent, witty, and tremendously attractive. You have a good head on your shoulders, and oftentimes find yourself the lone beacon of reason in a sea of silliness. You take great pleasure in many things. You are proficient in nearly all of them, though you will never own it. Lest you seem too perfect, you have a tendency toward prejudgement that serves you very ill indeed.

Well, I guess that settles it. For my part, I am Miss Elizabeth Bennett, that I know. But I’m curious, who are you? Which Pride and Prejudice Character are you most like? Be brave! Take the quiz, and leave your answers in the comment section. I’m curious to see who you are. :-)

Homeless!

November 6th, 2007

Actually, being homeless isn’t so bad at all – especially if one has a sister who opens her house to you in the meantime! :-) On the contrary, we aren’t really ‘homeless’ but only ‘houseless,’ as Dad puts it. We will never really be without a home.

We’re currently living with Sharon’s family in Poughkeepsie, and all fit rather snuggly in their small, yet cozy house – it all works out quite nicely when Mom and Dad sleep in the family room, and the four of us downstairs in the basement.

It’s been a lot of fun being with the Kruses! We spend most of our evenings together watching movies and eating popcorn, or perhaps playing a game of Spit, Egyptian Rat Screw or Boggle, and having an altogether wonderful time of it!

Yes, being homeless isn’t so bad after all.

- and for those of you wondering, we’re surviving splendidly with only one bathroom.

The House Closing

November 2nd, 2007

It wasn’t how I thought it would be. I imagined a check or two, a few signatures, and a handshake. But it wasn’t like that – not at all.

Instead, I sat inside of a large conference room with 2 lawyers, a mortgage broker, and a real estate agent. Everyone had a large dossier (sometimes several of them) full of documents, and impressive looking calculators. Everyone was friendly and cordial, but it was apparent that there was work to be done – and a lot of it.

The closing was destined to be an hour and a half process, and I was about to receive an inside look into the world of real estate.

Not that I understood what I saw. :)

First the mortgage broker lady (I think that’s who she is) and the 2 lawyers crunched numbers, compared documents, and sent and received faxes. It was a myriad of papers, cell phone calls, and more papers. “It is amazing to me how lawyers can be so organized as they all are!”

Next the buyers came, and it was signing time. Sign here, sign there, sign everywhere. I’m sure Mom’s fingers are tired from all the signatures! It was a steady stream of faxes, legal documents, and checks. Yes – one check simply doesn’t do. There must be several.

Sigh…. If only we could go back to the days where a simply contract and a handshake were all that were required. I know it sounds like an oxy moron, but thank God for honest lawyers!

So, we are now officially homeless (or house-less as Dad prefers to call it)! A new adventure begins.

Going “Unplugged”

November 1st, 2007

Well folks, the computer is going unplugged today, and we’ll be officially “offline”. Luckily, I just bought my laptop a week ago, and we’ll be able to get email. We’ll also probably be able to write posts and such, but I can make no guarantees – unsecured wireless hotspots are sometimes hard to find. :)

What I can say though, is that this will be the last post before we finish the sale of the house. Thanks for all your prayers! (We could still use them, by the way). Crunch time is upon us, and we’re tired, and a bit behind schedule. We must Persevere!

I feel like an astronaut coming back into earth’s atmosphere. There are those few minutes where they aren’t in contact with the folks at mission control….

God Bless! Over and out.

Farewell to Willie

November 1st, 2007

Yesterday we said goodbye to a dear friend of ours – permanently.

He had been with my family through thick and thin,

Carried us when we could walk no longer,

Faithful, and lovable companion, our dear Willie.

He was known as a big fellow, rough around the edges perhaps, but at heart, Willie was as gentle as could be, and tried his very best to please us in everything he did. The dear boy! He left us on October 30th, 2007.

Willie, is no more.

Poor chap suddenly broke down when we needed him the most, while driving his master to work on a cold, Autumn night. He simply couldn’t take it anymore, and breathed his last. Willie, or Candycane as some called him, has passed away.

*sigh* Ever seen such flashy white and red stripes or smooth profile?

He lived to a right old age, Willie did, and worked hard up until the very day of his passing.

Our van was towed to a place where he will be taken apart and used for scrap metal, so if any of you buy a washing machine within the next six months or so, treat it with the utmost respect: it just might be Willie. :-)
