Mornings!

February 26th, 2008

I love waking up early – how awesome it is to be the first one awake in the family. It’s amazing how much you miss if you sleep in that extra half hour!

Then again, I’m a semi-night owl. I love staying up, watching the stars, watching the fire (if there happens to be one around), and watching great movies.

I think the compromise is taking a siesta everyday. :-) Anyway…

My family knows I’m not an early morning person. But it really is worth changing sleeping schedules to enjoy that lovely peaceful time. Read this quote – it certainly motivates me to wake up earlier!

“Early rising promotes cheerfulness, invigorates the system, and in many other ways contributes to health. It also assists devotion. There is a solemn stillness before the dawn of day, in a winter morning, peculiarly favorable to devotional feelings; and nothing is better calculated to fill the mind with grateful and adoring views of the beneficence of the Creator, than the refreshing sweetness of a summer morn. Whoever sleeps away this period, loses half the pleasures of existence. To sally forth and enjoy the calmness and serenity of such a season; to listen to the sweet warbling of the birds; to behold the sparkling dewdrops, and the gayety of the opening flowers, as all nature smiles at the approaching of the rising sun; to join the music of creation, in lifting up a song of softest, sweetest melody, in praise of their great Author, is no common luxury.”

~ Harvey Newcomb “Young Lady’s Guide” pg. 178-179

I am in hearty agreement, Angie! Although, admittedly, emerging in zombie-like fashion from under the covers and braving the icy air (though invigorating, surely), can sometimes be rather a bit of an epic struggle against the will. I would go so far as to say that early risers are the unsung heroes of our society, the movers, the shakers, the what-have-you! I do, however, find the idea of a “siesta” (even the name makes one cringe. It sounds more like a thumbscrew that saw service in the Spanish Inquisition than anything else that comes to mind) both repugnant and somewhat Machiavellian.

Esther! Esther Middle Name Watson! That is no fair! I demand a recount! I demand my grievances redressed! When I was writing my comment, no one else had commented yet, and it was to be my third time as the first commentor. This has all been ruined now.

I’ve started getting up at 6 am. The sunrise is so beautiful. Unfortunately, I’m still a night owl. Burning the candle at both ends isn’t wise.

    There’s always siestas! :-D

Well I must admit that I am in transition… I love to stay up late! I can study and no one else is up to bother me… On the other hand I love waking up early and reading my Bible! It is so peaceful…

Sigh… I must say that I’m in the late night category right now… :) I generally either stay up late researching crazy inspirations, working on computer projects, reading the Bible, and/or philosophizing to myself.

The absolute best though, is to play guitar late late at night outside, under the stars, after everyone is in bed. That is awesome!

    Great post Angie!

I love getting up early, making myself a cup of hot tea, and watching the sunrise! The only hard part is convincing myself to get up and face the cold morning! But once I do it is very much worth it!

P.S. I love that quote, and am going to copy it into my scrapbook =)

I must concur with both the late nighters and the early risers. I am by nature a night owl, and night will always be my favorite time of day (particularly because it is not a time of day), however I also feel that morning has a magic that cannot be replaced by any other, and if lost, the day loses a great deal. Rising when all is still peaceful before chaos begins to intrude allows for meditation that helps to carry one through the entire day. Silence is not easy to find, and I take it whenever I can get it, both late at night and as early in the morning as I can pry myself from out of dreaming.

Hmm… if I get up before the sun I am great, I mean, REALLY happy, but if not, I am not so great unless I wake up at eight or so.

And I am not only a night owl, but I will be surprised if I don’t end up on the graveyard shift somewhere during my life before I make it big writing books. I spend way too much time not sleeping at night, and way too much time writing and exploring worlds. Yes, there worlds in my head. Worlds living, dying, worlds that are born in an instant and die in a lifetime. Okay… I need to get to bed. Either I am getting poetic or tired. Maybe I’ll write more about Droon’s misadventures tonight, or maybe trace out Kelreid’s discoveries and battles among the planets. Or maybe I’ll get some sleep.

Yes night seems to be the best time to write! I must agree! Most of my good writing happens at night! i justh ave not been inspired enough lately! unfortunately but again as mr darcy said and the post said morning is so peacful and such too.

Ah, Darcy is very right. There is a fairy-magic that hangs about the early morning, and it is very wise to wake up in time for this magical charm in the air. And it also smells uncannily like Time in the early morning. Interestingly enough, if you wake up in a brand-new building, you lose thing magical effect of the morning.

Finally I got my avatar! I hope this works…

I really must get to bed earlier if I want to take advantage of the mornings!

I disagree Sir Gwin! Did not thyself study (most scholarly I might add) the Spanish tongue? :-)

I agree Elizabeth! A cup of tea is so perfect in the morning!

Indeed. That is surprisingly… um … never mind

  • Nate

    February 27, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Yes, you are correct Angie. Way back in my past, I did undertake the journey, I did descend down into those dark paths of Hispania. I’m afraid I must maintain that “siesta” and thumbscrew just go together like peas in a pod. On the more serious side, I liked the post very much and am of like mind. It’s just that terrible urge to “sleep in another 5 minutes”…

  • Angie

    February 27, 2008 at 3:51 pm

    Siesta and thumbscrew? Hmm…

I’m afraid I don’t remember much Spanish when we studied it, sigh. But it is (ahem) a very beautiful language! Almost as good as Italian, and much much better than French :-D

Yes it always begins at five extra minutes, then it switches to 10, then 15, then you might as well forget about waking up early at all!

  • Andrew Higginbotham

    February 27, 2008 at 5:03 pm

thumbscrew? Eak!!! Not on me!!!! I will take the Siesta but not that devilish thumbscrew! LOL I too am a victim of “5 more minutes” :) I ought not too… LOL

Angie, a thumbscrew is a tool used in the inquisition. I will not go into how it was used on non-Catholics…

Thanks for the info! I knew it had something to do with pain :-)

I guess that meant a lot of pain! (I glance quickly about, then hide my hands…;-))

  • Nate

    February 27, 2008 at 5:58 pm

LOL. I’m sure Foxe’s Book of Martyrs has some delightful thumbscrew description, although I can’t say for sure. It is terrible, the exponential growth of the “just a few more” minutes. Reminds me of dominos.

Allow me to proffer a quote from Pilgrim’s Progress on this selfsame business.

“O wretched man that I am, that I should sleep in the day time! That I should sleep in the midst of difficulty! That I should so indulge the flesh, as to use that rest for ease to my flesh…Yea, now also I am like to be benighted, for the day is almost spent. O that I had not slept!”

Ok. Relax dude. Those Puritan folks took their naps pretty darn seriously. Personally I would rather let myself sleep in a little bit in the morning than to help myself to a thumbscrew in the afternoon, but that’s just me. Late nights happen, Thank God God ain’t a Puritan.

A smallish town called Delhi in the state of New York. It’s what we like to refer to as “upstate”,( i.e. not NYC) and is in the Catskill Mts. though I’m not sure if that would ring a bell with anyone out-of-state.
