A Day in Lexington

February 27th, 2008

The Willi are indeed moving to Tennessee, but we cannot leave our temporary home in Virginia without seeing some of the state’s prominent and historic sights! We have planned and scheduled many a field trip for the next few weeks, and our first stop? Lexington!

I don’t know about you, but I’m fascinated with history, even though half the time I cannot remember dates and names (I try folks…I try), so a day spent in Lexington with my family is not only an opportune learning experience, but fun!

So…

…yesterday morning, after all morning preparations were made, all six of us piled into our beloved mini van ‘Homer’ and set out on a little adventure.

Unfortunately, it rained the entire afternoon, but we were armed with windbreakers or hats, so a little water didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves. :-)

Let me see, we learned about the earlier life of Stonewall Jackson and toured his house, saw General Lee’s grave, Washing and Lee University, the VMI, a George Marshall museum and…well, take a look at the pictures; they pretty much tell the story!

Did you know that Thomas Jackson was very concerned with his health and took great cares as to what foods he consumed? Perhaps he’s a fellow vegetarian/vegan! So we’re not the only ones with a strange diet after all. :-)

P.S. Sorry about the non-existing thumbnails. We’re ‘experiencing technical difficulties’ with that currently. For the moment, click on the first picture and scroll through the rest by clicking the ‘next’ arrow.

Are y’all vegetarian/vegan? Or is it a temporary thing? I love the pictures! Grand photos of VMI! What more can I say? Love so many of the pictures!

    Violinman,

I can see your picture! It is working!

    Sir Valiant,

Yes, we’re all vegetarians and vegans. It’s not a temporary thing; we’ve been doing this for nine or eight years now! (I think) I’ve actually had no experience cooking with meat, but I really enjoy experimenting with fun and different ways to make vegan foods tasty and appetizing. We’re not super strict though; we occasionally eat pizza, or if at a party/potluck eat a dish with cheese or eggs.

I like the look of technical difficulties with the thumbnails. They look like little banners with quotes or descriptions on them….

    like magnetic poetry!

It gives the viewer a chance to imagine what the photo is going to look like and then to click and see if they’re right. :-D

I can make a game out of anything. Speaking of games, R.J. beat me at Doodle Dice…..twice. :-(

    Hmmm, I didn’t predict too accurately. ;-)

It’s nice to see your mom in some photos now that you’ve all become photographers.

“Is that girl bored or something?” made me laugh out loud.

    For real. :-D

    Kasie,

Why are y’all vegetarian/vegan? (BTW from what you said it sounds like you are not vegan… (vegans will not use leather or any thing to do with the killing of an animal)
    Just on a vegetarian diet.)
    Esther,

Why not try to like historical things? The Bible is full of them! I believe that history is important because we need to remember what God has done in the past!

Mr. Higginbotham makes a good point. Vegans do not use ANY animals products, ever. That includes honey because taking the honey exploits bees. Vegans are hardcore and don’t even wear wool. The sheer weight of trying to be vegan is too much for me.

    *grins sheepishly*

    Get it, shear/sheer?

I double commented. Is that verboten?

You’re right Aunt Frances! They do look like magnetic poetry! Glad you’re having fun with it. Tell R.J. to keep up with those doodle dices, and Nikki to practice Spit – I plan on a few tournaments when they finally get down here!

I agree Sir Valiant. That’s one reason I do like learning about history; to remember what God has done in the past.

I’ve never heard that about vegans before. I thought vegans were vegetarians, but they don’t eat dairy or dairy products, eggs, or milk. That’s pretty much what we do. Well, I guess we just created a new version of vegans!
But anyway, we’re vegetarians for health reasons. We mostly follow the Hallelujah Diet (by George Malkmus), juice carrots, drink our barleygreen, and all that good stuff. :-) There have been several reports and stories of people who were battling cancer, but after a switch to the Hallelujah Diet, the cancer was gone! (after some months of eating this way first, of course)

Have no fear, Esther. We’re cooking something up here on the blog that will have all you guys learning some little known (but very cool) history!

Mua ha hah hah ha…… :)

Just to clarify (KC mentioned it) we eat a plant-based diet for health reasons ONLY! We’re not one of those envirenmental/animal rights people. ;-) Hunt as much as you like.

For my school a couple years ago, Mom had me read The China Study, by Dr. Colin Campell. Quite an eye-opener! His research confirms that the killer diseases in US are directly linked to diet.

OK, we have some thumbnails now (manually added). I’ll have to contact the author(s) of our picture plugin program, and see what we can do to fix the problem. I know why it’s happening, just can’t figure out how to fix it…

Yeah, you’re all crazy. Nuts. Crackers. Speaking of which, what are crackers without cheese?? What are lettuce and tomatto without bacon??? What is a milkshake without milk? Ok, yeah yeah it’s silk milk and rice dream, I know, fine. The point is that everytime I eat a burger or smack down some sweet non-nutritional sugar-filled goodness, I shed a bitter tear for you. I really do. Poor things. *sniff* See, now you’ve got me cryin again. I do hate that killing animals is involved in being a carnivore, I shed some tears for the bunnies too, but hey. They taste so good. I love bunnies. Yum.

Well on the diet note… We do not eat a “typical American diet” Our beef is grass fed, Hormone free, all natural, Raised by a local Christian Homeschooling farmer. We also get chicken all natural chicken from the same farmer! We get our milk straight from the cow from another Christian homeschooling farmer (Nothing is done to it). Our eggs come from the same farm where we get the milk… So you start to get the picture? LOL We have a natural foods company ship food to us every two months…(It comes direct in a semi)… We attempt not to eat out… That is about it… Questions? LOL

Mr. Darcy, you are a consummate carnivore. Your empathy for your fellow vegetarian is commendable. Carrion…ahem, I mean carry on, good sir.
