Easter in Virginia

March 27th, 2008

And a lovely Easter day it was at that!

The plan was for us to spend our Easter dinner and evening with Karlyn’s parents at their house not far from here. And so, after church in the morning and a few hours in the afternoon of baking and cooking for the occasion, the whole lot of us piled into Jason’s 15 passenger van, and headed for the Grandparents’ house.

15 people in a 15 passenger van… A cozy ride ’twas, but we all fit and it saved on gas! With a few church basketball games or field trips in which we’ve carpooled together, we’re getting quite used to it by now. :-)

Over the river, through the woods, to Grandmother’s (and Grandfather’s!) house we go!

Well, not quite over the river or through the woods, but to Grandma and Grandpa’s house we did indeed go! (Karlyn’s parents) When we arrived Mrs. A had set the long table with her best china, silver spoons and soft cloth napkins (nice and ‘fancified), and from the kitchen came the delicious aroma of food ready to be eaten. :-)

It was a beautiful day outside, filled with blooming flowers and budding trees (yes, Spring is come!), and Grandma and Grandpa A. have 10 acres of land, so a lot of time was spent enjoying the outdoors. The boys played a few rounds of football while Grandpa walked about the grounds with Joseph and I, showing us the old graveyard in the woods and the ruins of an old general store. Their house, built in the 1800′s, used to be a stagecoach stop and inn; you can imagine what neat tid-bits of history there is to be had in such a place!

There was an Easter egg hunt for the kids, games, lots of scrumptious dishes and desserts, and fellowship with brothers and sisters in the Lord. What a wonderful celebration of Christ’s Resurrection!

But enough said on the subject; it’s time for some pictures! (y’all knew that was coming…) Read the rest of this entry »

Introducing: The Story of The Land!

March 24th, 2008

land mystery small

Well everyone, we are about to do something here on TheWilli.com that we’ve never done before! It involves history, research, mystery and code-breaking. It incorporates fact and fiction woven together in completely new (and hopefully enjoyable) ways.

Immediately some of you JT400 veterans might be smelling a treasure hunt – but there is no treasure to be had. Others among you may suspect a historical fiction novel in the making – but alas, this story has no specific plotline, nor a tidy ending. Instead, it is a story and hunt that you uncover…. And the amazing, little-known history that you’ll encounter, and the fun you’ll have learning it will be your reward!

Welcome to the Story of the Land!

The Story of the Land is:

  • …A fun way to learn some little known history about our new area
  • …Meant to be enjoyable, somewhat challenging, but not frustrating
  • …An activity that any and all are welcomed to participate in!

The Story of the Land is definitely NOT:

  • …Anything near as complex as the JT400 (please don’t compare…!)
  • …Anything near as hard as the JT400
  • …Something that requires a lot of time (remember, this is supposed to be fun!)

So are you ready? This is how to get started! (In 3 easy steps! :) )

Step #1:

Watch and wait! There’s no telling when the “mystery posts” will come, so pay attention to all our bloggings. The only thing I can tell you is that the first special post will appear within the next couple of weeks – maybe tomorrow, maybe several days from now. So stay alert! :)

[Note] The “Story of the Land” will kind of reflect our blogging style and family circumstances, i.e., if our family is busy don’t expect anything new in the story! :)

He is Risen!

He is risen

Happy Resurrection Day everyone!

On a Saturday Morning

March 22nd, 2008

Look at the loveliness that met me this morning while out for a jog!

These yellow flowers especially caught my attention, so I ran inside and snapped a few pictures. Aren’t they pretty?

p1100450.jpg

It certainly is rewarding to enjoy beauty like this after a morning’s jog, not to mention the warm Spring weather.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the road has gone…

Wait, that’s not the road; that’s the driveway! Close enough I suppose. (definitely long enough!) :-)

Have a blessed weekend!

-Kasie

P.S. I think I can safely say that Spring is here for good – it’s in the 60′s!

Natural Bridge

March 18th, 2008

Natural Bridge really rocks! :-D

The other day we visited one of Virginia’s landmarks, a place we had wanted to see before we move to Tennessee. “Back in the day”, Natural Bridge brought crowds of tourists from all across the country to gaze upon the awe-inspiring arch. I don’t believe it is as popular now, but it is still worth visiting! Thomas Jefferson himself liked it so much, that he actually bought the bridge and the surrounding 157 acres from King George. And the cool thing is, he bought it for the equivalent of $2.40! Don’t you wish land was that cheap these days? Right now the park is going for 34 million.

But forgive me I am beginning to stray.

The place was practically deserted, and very peaceful, and we had a nice day trip out of it. We kept joking and saying things like “Boy, there are so much people here… is this busy or what?” :-D

And of course we took pictures! Walter was the photographer that day, so I can’t take credit for these.

Wisdom From the Past (St. Patrick Special)

March 17th, 2008

I am, then, first of all, countryfied, an exile, evidently unlearned, one who is not able to see into the future, but I know for certain, that before I was humbled I was like a stone lying in deep mire, and he that is mighty came and in his mercy raised me up and, indeed, lifted me high up and placed me on top of the wall. And from there I ought to shout out in gratitude to the Lord for his great favours in this world and for ever, that the mind of man cannot measure.

Signs of Spring

March 15th, 2008

As a Northerner I’m used to winter weather lingering on well into March. In New York, Spring doesn’t really come until mid April! But here in Virginia, it is another matter altogether: spring arrives right on time. Imagine that! :-)

This week especially has been filled with warm, sunny days. Yesterday’s temperatures reached 70 degrees! It’s on days like this that you’ll most likely find me (and possibly the entire family!) enjoying the outdoors. Just today I was strolling about the lawn, and to my delight I spotted Karlyn’s crocuses in full bloom!

p1100342.jpg

I love crocuses – they’re a sure sign that Spring is here for good!

p1100340.jpg

My nieces and nephews also pointed out to me the daffodils…

p1100344.jpg

…and the rose buds beginning to bud!

p1100349.jpg

Splendid, is it not? I was even able to wear my flip-flops a little, and of course, that made my day! Spring is sublime.

Shall we not have one final shot of the crocuses that I love so much?

p1100339.jpg

There we are!

So, how’s the weather like in the homes of all our dear readers? Is Spring as pleasant as it is here in Virginia?

God bless!

-Kasie
