Wisdom From the Past (St. Patrick Special)

March 17th, 2008

I am, then, first of all, countryfied, an exile, evidently unlearned, one who is not able to see into the future, but I know for certain, that before I was humbled I was like a stone lying in deep mire, and he that is mighty came and in his mercy raised me up and, indeed, lifted me high up and placed me on top of the wall. And from there I ought to shout out in gratitude to the Lord for his great favours in this world and for ever, that the mind of man cannot measure.

Here there be comments...

    Ummm…….. Huh?

St. Patrick’s Day is about remembering the life of Patrick, and how God used a self-described plain man to further His kingdom!

Alas, unfortunately, the cultural Irish love of the bottle has somewhat deadened this holiday…. :)

I am actually (believe it or not), 1/8th Irish – but who’s keeping track? :)

Hey hey hey! It’s the Matthew Thomas! Sure, we’ll get you all an email with your address on it shortly.

So true walter its sad really! (and i was JOKING!)

    March 18, 2008 at 9:56 am

Hmm… this is about the most sad holiday out there… but I’ve written enough today.
    *Hic*
And yes Esther. “Why is the rum *always* gone?” I don’t even own any. “Ah. That’s why.” Yes indeed. And while we’re counting…

    I am about 16% Irish.

But I can’t let that go just like that. If the geneology is right… I am about 50% Scottish. HAHA!!! Which makes me feel much better!! Because Scots rock!!
(And… why pray tell is there not a Scottish holiday!? World’s greatest injustice.)

And, BTB (By The By) Bagpipes are 100% Scottish. Not Irish.

I just got the email update that this post was posted. It’s a day late. Is there a way to get notified of a post that’s quicker than this method?

  • Walter

    March 18, 2008 at 5:27 pm

    @Aunt Frances
Well, there’s RSS!!!! That’s “real time” quick, and is not hard to set up in Thunderbird (I could guide you).

In all fairness to the emails – they usually come out quicker than that, and have never (as far as I know), been more than 24 hours off. Maybe feedburner’s servers were overloaded yesterday….

I couldn’t agree more on what “Justing” said,
(he’s got a good head on his shoulders) exept for the fact that he’s a whole 50% Scottish (lucky).

I’m about 1/16 Irish (maybe a little less)
Thinks this is a sad excuse for a holiday and refused to wear green. (I’m such a rebel :-) )
Bagpipes are 100% Scottish (I play em)
    SCOTS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Natural Bridge looked awesome! And the Cave. I love caves. :-) Some of those pictures were gorgeous. Very nice. But where is Nates tradmarked coat? (Every time I write “Nate” I think of our no-stop-laughing-spree) :-)
Great to see whats going on over there!

Yes, those were some good times. I remember laughing so hard that my sides hurt.
I am afraid though that it is getting too warm down here for the leather trench coat. Sad isn’t it.

Whoa Matthew – cool avatar! Which reminds me, today we saw a movie with a guy who looked just like you! (Disney’s “Johnny Tramain,” the character ‘Rab’) It was so funny to see ‘you’ on screen like that!

Hehe, I have no Scottish blood in me to boast of. Mom tells me that I am, however, 1/16 Irish! Yes!

Oh yes, and bagpipes are rather sweet, but I believe the violin is just as cool…and the mandolin, tin whistle, and piano. :-) In fact, musical instruments in general rock.

It is my opinion that we may thank our lucky stars that there is not a Scottish holiday on the American calendar. In my book there’s nothing cheesier (and in some cases more disconcerting) than what St. Patrick’s Day has, unfortunately, become. The modern American perception of Ireland, spurred in part by new age/neo-Celtic antianglo hype and romanticism, has been shaped by the St. Patrick’s festivities to such an extent that when your average American thinks of Ireland he thinks only of pubs, potatos, leprechauns, green, “kiss me I’m Irish” t-shirts, corny songs with lame lyrics and even lamer accents “When Irish eyes are…” (AH!!!), Celtic Woman, concertinas, and all manner of alcoholic beverages. Lest you think Ireland the only country straddled with these sorry elements of an invented past, things for Scotland are not much better. Cliches of Burns, haggis, Scotland the Brave (AH!!!), Amazing Grace on bagpipes, and kilt extravaganza the mainstream. Everyone who claims an ounce of ancestry from these countries can be grateful that in reality, neither country is in fact genuinely this way at all (save in the tourist shops).

Bravo! Bravo! Spoken like a true Scotsman at heart, Sir Gwin. It is indeed unfortunate how commercial St. Patrick’s Day has become. As you said, most people associate it with clover and the color green among other things. Too bad, because there’s a really neat story behind the holiday!

Have any of y’all seen VeggieTales the Sumo Wrestler one? Neat St. Patrick story in the beginning of that…

    March 19, 2008 at 9:10 pm

No, unfortunately we have not! I hear it’s pretty good though. Have you heard their 70s CD? lol

  • Joy

    March 19, 2008 at 9:58 pm

So, how is Walter 1/8 Irish and Kasie is 1/16? Am I missing a generation here? ;) Grandma was 1/2 Irish, so if I am doing the math correctly (and there’s no guarantee that I am), we are 1/8 Irish. Happy (late) St. Patrick’s Day!

  • Walter

    March 19, 2008 at 10:04 pm

    @Joy
That is because (ahem) somebody tends to comment without looking at previous comments or doing her research properly! :)

Yay! It worked! I added an RSS feed to My Yahoo! page. We’ll see how well it works when you all make a new post. :-D

PS-I have a new flickr photo web site ID and address. I just posted a new photo recipe.

Oops! my’bad. Seriously though, I could have sworn we were 1/16 Irish – not 1/8! Well if that’s the case, all the better! Not that it really makes a difference one way or another. I’m American.

Oh, and hey (ahem Walter), maybe it’s because you changed the settings on our blog so that your comments don’t come through the email and I therefore don’t see them! Humph. :-)

I already know about photo recipe. I’m on your flickr RSS feed….. :D

Well I beat you all not that it really matters! lol But yes true Nate it is sad really. Its sad that there are even stereotypes in the first place! but its still fun to play!

  • Matthew Thomas

    March 20, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Hmmm, Rab from Johnny Tramain? We use to, (or is it used to) watch that movie all the time when we were younger. I can only remember how we saw all the historical incorrectness last time we saw it. (We’re so bad). I’ll have to see it again.

And I agree, musical instruments in general rock. :)

And I’m sure we’ll see “The Return of the Coat” next winter, eh Nate?

Boy, this conversation has strayed almost as much as “Thoughts on Auld Lang Syne” Goodness gracious! ROFL LOL etc… tthem was the good old days…

But thinking back to Nathan’s post on the 19th… that is about the best thing I have heard yet. Heavens, I don’t want to imagine everybody walking about in plaid… *shivers* Cultural holidays go waaaaaaaaaaaaay to far. And “Irsh Eyes” never ceases to annoy, especially when there is a cheesy accent involved.

Cheeeeeeesy. Perfect word. Sad and cheesy. I don’t like cheese.
