Communication

April 19th, 2008

I walked in through the back door and into the kitchen one morning, heading straight for my blue cup and the faucet – I had just returned from my morning jog, and I was thirsty!

“Good morning Kasie!” Joe called from the dining room, followed by a chorus of ‘good mornings!’ from my other nieces and nephews all eating their breakfast.

“Morning guys!”

I drained my glass of water and glanced at the calendar to see if there was anything scheduled for that day that I didn’t already hear about. ‘Friday, April 18th’ I looked closer at the small writing penciled into this particular block. ‘Tea Tavern, 1:30′ Tea Tavern, eh?

[Tea Tavern. A place where tea (not high tea) is taken along with scones, fruit and the like; not an extremely formal affair, but a very pleasant atmosphere and quaint place.]

“Um, Karlyn,” I asked my sister-in-law, “Is there something I should know about going to a Tea Tavern today?”

“Oh! Didn’t you know? You, your Mom, Angie, Katrina and I are going there this afternoon to have tea together. It’s just us ladies, since the boys camped out last night.”

“Really? Tea! Sounds like fun!” I filled my glass again, excited, but also wondering at how this information didn’t get around to me, especially since I was one of the party. Hmm…

Before hopping up the stairs I once again glanced at the calendar to make sure I had read the proper time for our ladies’ outing that day. There ’twas: Tea Tavern, 1:30. 1:30 it is then! But wait, there was something else written above this inscription…Avalanche, 7:00. I turned to Karlyn again,

“Um, Karlyn? Are we by any chance going to a baseball game tonight?”

“Yes, if all goes well. We have a few free tickets, so sometime today we have to figure out who’s going and who’s staying home.”

“That sounds great too!” and up the stairs I hopped and into my (our) bedroom.

*sigh* What does one have to accomplish in order to be ‘in the know’ these days? :-)

It seems as if communication ‘problems’ like these occur all the time in large families, and frankly, I find it very amusing! (as long as I’m notified in time enough to ready myself) Instances like these occur all the time in our family; when Mom informs me that I’m volunteered to babysit that night; when Nate suddenly finds out that his party is being held on the morning of his birthday (in other words ‘now’). The list goes on… Especially in our case, two families in one household, communication between us can be a very interesting thing indeed!

Ever experienced anything like it before?

Oh, and by the way, our afternoon tea was lovely, and the baseball game was lots of fun! (even though the home team lost miserably!)

This happens a lot in our not-so-large family. Usually our oldest son just wasn’t paying attention…and me, well, I guess I forget easily. I call Victoria (our oldest) my palm pilot. If it weren’t for her, I’d forget a lot of things. It usually goes like this:

Husband: ‘Hon, we have that race to go to on Saturday.’

    Me: ‘Race, what race?’

Husband: ‘The race I told you about.’

(daughter chimes in) ‘Mom, don’t you remember? We were talking about it the other day.’

Me: ‘Are you sure I was here? Are you sure you didn’t discuss this at work with one of Dad’s patients?’

Sis: ‘Yes, I’m sure you were there.’ ‘Dad, she was there, wasn’t she?’

Husband: ‘Yes, I’m sure she was, she just must have forgotten.’

…and so it goes. I still think that some of the planning that happens I’m not present for, at least I hope so! If my memory is that bad at 41…eep!, I don’t want to think about when I’m older!

Your tea room sounds lovely!!! We don’t have anything like that in our town. I have envisioned starting a tea room/Christian book store in town. We don’t have one of those either. Perhaps one day.

    Blessings -

I think that happens in all families. But probably happens more in big ones

Lol! My mom does that all too often Mrs. Camille! It’s just one of those things. :-)

I agree Esther. We’re not exactly a BIG family at this point, but us and Jason’s crew, we’re pretty large! Communication – yeah. It’s funny!

I think Justin is referring to Guglielmo Marconi, inventor of radio communication. :-)

Nope, no communication problems in my family. ;-)
