Happy Mother’s Day

May 11th, 2008

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! May you have a blessed day.

“Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” Proverbs 31: 28

My favorite quotes from Mother, originally published in 1911: (highly recommended!)

And suddenly theories and speculation ended, and she [Margaret] knew…. For another world, perhaps leisure and beauty and luxury- but in this one, “Whosoever loses his life shall gain it.” Margaret knew now that her mother was not only the truest, and finest, the most generous woman she had ever known, but the happiest as well.

“You know, these days when women just serenely ignore the question of children, or at most, as a special concession, bring up one or two- just the one or two whose expenses can be comfortably met!- there’s something magnificent in a woman like your mother, who begins eight destinies instead of one!” ;-)

We love you Mom!

Something About Letters

May 6th, 2008

I strolled down the driveway on a bright summery afternoon. It was a beautiful day, to say in the least; nary a cloud in the sky, and the weather was warm and breezy. I observed my young nieces and nephews playing together on the lawn and enjoying the outdoors. They beckoned to me to join them in their games, but I shook my head and continued walking. My destination? The Mailbox!

Have you ever flipped through the mail before, and sifted through the pile of various bills and fliers? There’s nothing particularly enjoyable about it really. But imagine your joy when suddenly you come upon a certain envelope, perhaps decorated with stickers and smiley faces on it, and it’s addressed to YOU!

It’s a great feeling, is it not? I know it may be a bit old fashioned for some of you, but I love letters; writing them, reading and receiving them. There’s something very special about seeing your name printed on a envelope, and reading its simple and sweet contents from a pen-pal or a friend from far away.

letters

Every day at noon, back at our old house in N.Y., Nate and I would race down the ramp and driveway, and scramble at the bottom around the mailbox, all just to see who could get the mail first! Of course, not wanting to appear as fools, we always waited until the mailman was well out of sight before plunging into our little game. :-)

This means nothing against emails, mind you. Emails are wonderful! I use it all the time; they’re speedy, easy, and therefore very handy. But all the same, there’s just something neat about getting a letter in the mail…

It’s just nice.

A Little Delay

May 5th, 2008

Sorry guys for the delay in “The Story of the Land”! Life, as it would seem, has gotten in the way a little bit…

Hopefully we’ll have the next update out sometime this week!

An Honorable Mention

May 2nd, 2008

A few months ago Ella and Erin at ModesTeen hosted a modest fashion contest for teen girls; enter a picture of yourself in your favorite modest outfit, and you’re eligible to win. 1st place receives a prize of a ModesTeen t-shirt and Do Hard Things t-shirt of choice, as well as Brett and Alex Harris’ new book, “Do Hard Things.”

‘Tis needless to say perhaps, but I entered! In fact, my recent commenting avatar is cropped from the photo I entered, for the information of our commenting readers.

At any rate, on May 1st the winner was to be announced. On that morning after checking my email, I found out that, although I hadn’t won first place, I received an Honorable Mention! Ella and Erin weren’t planning on having anymore than a first place winner, but apparently they couldn’t make a decision, so they added Honorable Mention. As my prize I get a choice between a ModesTeen t-shirt or a Do Hard Things t-shirt from The Rebelution. (huzzah!) I’m having a hard time making a decision, so I’m considering choosing one t-shirt and then purchasing the other since I like them both so much!

So who was the winner of ModesTeen’s modest/fashion contest? (I was tickled at this one…) Kaysie, of Alabaster Box and Inner Sanctuary! Isn’t it the wildest thing that two KC’s would place in this contest? How coincidental!

Anyway, I’m very excited and pleasantly surprised at my honorable mention, I just had to share it with you!

It’s such lovely weather today, I think I’ll join my nieces and nephews and enjoy the outdoors with them. God bless your day!

The Buchanan Reenactment

May 1st, 2008

As Walter has mentioned, our family and a few families from church visited Buchanan for their 2nd Annual Civil War Reenactment. It was such a blast!

Buchanan was the sight of a small battle where Union troops lead by General Hunter strove to capture the town – an engagement also known as “Hunter’s Raid”. The Confederate forces (lead mostly by calvary general McCausland) pushed them out of the town, and drove them eventually to Salem where Hunter was defeated.

From my point of view the Buchanan reenactment felt accurate! The added “coolness” of having calvary amidst the skirmishes was breathtaking! And of course having “General Lee” there was inspiring, if not accurate :-) .

I had worn a simple Victorian-ish dress for the first day, because I wanted to save my green civil war dress for the “big day” :-D . We arrived at Buchanan early to attend a “Civil War Fashion Show” in a period inn/tea-room. We squished in with our friends, ate our colossal muffins, and enjoyed the show. In fact, we enjoyed it so much… we forgot to take many pictures :-) . But E.M., Kasie and I kept nudging each other “Oooh! I like that!” “hey that looks like your dress…”

Jason with some of the kids, and another family from church arrived, so we grouped together and watched parade, and a town skirmish. It just so happened, that the side that was prohibited to bystanders, was the side with all the shade! That was the first time in 2 years that I got sunburn :-) . Everyone kept asking me how I was “surviving” in my dress, but I felt just as cool (or hot) that I would have in normal clothes. I was pleasantly surprised how my hoop skirt kept me cool, and did fit through door ways :-)

After the town skirmish, the troops headed to the river where the calvary and artillery had more freedom to “fight”. It was rather impressive to see them draw their horses into lines, and then charge into each other. They only smacked their sabers together to make a noise, but it was impressive all the same!

Yet after the battle, dark clouds threatened to storm, and we decided it was time to head home. Though not after we had first walked across the perilous suspension foot bridge! The bridge wasn’t at really dangerous, it just felt like the entire body was swaying at every step :-D Kasie remarked that it felt like we were at sea!

We topped off the day with a BBQ and fellowship back at home. Although disappointed we couldn’t make it to the Confederate ball that evening, we had fun teaching each other English Country Dances on the deck! (That is, until the rain drove us inside ;-) )

What an awesome weekend it was!
