Our First Fireworks

July 8th, 2008

No worry folks; the title doesn’t mean that we’ve never seen fireworks in our lives, only that we’ve never set them off before!

Ever since we bought our our land, Providence Glen, we’ve been planning and looking forward to shooting off our own fireworks. We have the room, the freedom (being outside of city limits has its privileges!), and it’s something we’ve never tried, so why not!

On the day before the 4th we made a little trip out to the nearest fireworks shop to have ourselves a look around. All I can say at this point is, “Oh my!” One could get lost in a place like that! There were packages and packages of every kind of fireworks, all stamped with terms like “cake,” and “morter”. If you’re an adventurous type of person, it was like being a kid in a candy store…just keep in mind that the amount of candy you can buy depends on how many pennies you have. :-) We had a budget however, and were able to get a little taste of everything and transport our treasures safely back home.

And on the next night…that was when the fun began!

We started off with few firecrackers; you know, simple child’s play, minuscule in the big scheme of things. :-D And as the night grew darker the boys got to work putting on our first fireworks show; us ladies sitting at a distance of course!

The whole thing was great! No major incidents, although we did have a rocket fire off in a horizontal direction, but seeing as we didn’t burn down our entire property, I think that’s proof that everything went quite well. :-)

Check out the pictures! They didn’t turn out as perfect as I would wish for, but after a while I only wanted to lay my head back and enjoy the show, rather than keeping my fingers on standby all the time!

I wonder when our next fireworks show will be? Perhaps Labor Day?

Take care y’all!

-Kasie

Looks like a lot of fun! We lit about 1000 fire crackers! As well as some other fun stuff! I like the Labor Day idea!

Yeah, It was fun – especially since we’ve never done it before!

(In NY, it’s kind of illegal. Unless you have a permit, a professional fireworks guy, a fire marshal, etc etc)

Wow – 1000 fire crackers! That must have made a ton of noise! We like the ones connected by string, otherwise lighting each individual cracker gets tedious. Actually, my particular favorite way to set ‘em off is to (#1) make a big bonfire, and (#2) simply throw a handful in! :-)

The noise is fun Esther! You’d like it at our place I’ll bet. Don’t worry; the boys will light them for us!

Well they were in packs of 16. I put up to 4 packs together! That was fun!!! I like the fire idea! I agree the noise is great! just cover your ears if need be! LOL

Well, fireworks may be illegal for your average citizen here in upstate NY, but some of our citizens here are clearly above average… hehe.

    @Andrew
That is a lot of fire crackers! Covering ears is necessary every once in a while when you get a really loud one. After throwing a handful in the fire we had a few ‘delayed’ ones that didn’t go off until five minutes later! That was a surprise. :-)

    @Nate
There were a few above average folk around our place in N.Y. also. Although we didn’t take part with them, we did enjoy watching the show from our own house. :-) Oh, and I heard about the fireworks show you enjoyed last weekend with Tim and fam. (their neighbor’s elaborate performance and so forth) Sounds like a load of fun!

We always get a kick out of the names of the fireworks. “Jade Dragon-breath”, “Happy Lotus”.
-Kasie: Oh yeah. It was a rip-roaring time. Papa Joe really outdid himself this year. It brought back memories of Josh’s b-day when we were all jamming outside on the very same night to “Boyz in da sink”. You should ask Tim about the “artist” LOL. And I believe you heard about the free dancing and spur of the moment America-inspired-liberty songs… We were very freedom-oriented.

Yes, they always try to come up with exotic or fearsome titles for fireworks. At the moment I can’t recall the names of any of the ones we got (other than ‘roman candle’ and a rocket or two!), but the word “dragon” must have been in half of them! Ah yes, the songs, the dancing, the midnight guitar playing, and believe making ‘Papa Joe’ (is that what you call him?) talk. :-) Indeed I must hear about this ‘artist’! Next Tuesday, I’ll find out. Have fun with Tim at the concert this week! Can’t wait to hear how that goes.

(Warning: Mild Language. I felt a little pedantic and had to get something out of my system.)

It is my personal and unbiased supposition that entrenched within most wights is a trait collaquially known as “Pyrotechnety.)

One might well imagine the ecstasy that the majorous populous experience when faced with the “rocket’s red glare” and “bombs bursting in air.” We take colossal pleasure in the inflammability and brisotechnic properties of certain substances, in ergo, gunpowder and tissue paper. This is in, scientific and pedantic fact, a vice we all share in common – the delight of the dubiously safe practice of alighting things past their flash point and watching them oxidize in often colorful and various unsafe ways. (As exemplified by the cylidrical tubes one lights only to see them bounce everywhere except where you want them to, powered by a sulfurous jet at one end.)

Why do we partake in such a eldritchly enjoyable pastime? Why is it we enjoy luminous flashes and suprasonic bangs? (And, on a curious sidenote, who actually enjoys an odiferous whiff of gunpowder smoke?)

Is it the elementary reaction that humans made when faced with the lightning bolt which light Fred Flintstone’s club afire and thus ushered in the age of civilization at the “hands” of the power of the flame?

Obviously not dear friends, obviously not.

I resigned this discussion into your capable hands, homies.

It’s almost uncanny. Whenever I post, no one else follows. I am always last. Do you have something against me?

Hehe, poor Justin. I think it’s because you’re either too late and miss the commenting conversations, or the average reader just doesn’t understand what you’re talking about. :-) (for myself I thought I’d wait a bit and see what others would comment in response to yours, but…) But look! Bill has commented after you, and so have I, so don’t feel bad and cheer up like a good chap, won’t you? :-P

Hi Bill! Yeah, the fireworks were dandy; you’ll have to join us someday to see another show! I’m glad to hear that you guys had fun. I’ve heard about WallE; thanks for sharing your little review. God bless you too!

    Ummm….

[looks at your loooooong comment, scratches head and raises eyebrow - what is he saying?!]

Your genius, Mr. Justin, is such that we all are loath to have our own meager comments posted next to your deep and lofty ones. Our own reputations could only suffer by the comparison. Please accept our appologies!

    [big grin] :)

@Wallter. I doubt your reputation would pale.

(oh, and about the main post)
I asked why we like fireworks (you know, bangs, flashes, and sizzles in general) AKA Pyrotechnics.

Why do we set off fireworks? Because we can.

I like the “W” you made. At first I thought it was a vertical letter instead of horizontal. ;-)
