Black Widow Spiders

September 12th, 2008

“I say spiders, for there were many”

Hidden inside some chimney pieces by the side of our house lived a whole family of black widow spiders!  Seven in all, most of them were found in old cardboard boxes which were immediately burned.

This is the view from the top.

This is a view of its underside – notice the little red hourglass shape

Thankfully God protected us from being bitten, even though one crawled up my arm!

After that experience we have been very careful what we touch! lol

Here there be comments...

Yeah, it was cool until one crawled up my arm! That was when it turned from cool to scary!

Ooh. Scary. At least they weren’t brown recluse.

Holy Moses, Nate, good show not dying on us! That was a mighty close shave there. Usually people talk about seeing black widows every time they see any old big black spider, but wow, that there’s the real deal all right. Freaky. I guess they’re more common down there than here. We had a lot in Oregon. Good going on putting Shelob and company out of commission. Keep an eye out though.

For now on, we wear gloves…

    Walter:
As you’re the tekkie guy for this site, I’ll whine to you.

I’m getting peeved. My new avatar won’t show up.

(I think this might be a conspiracy against me, because whenever I’ve tried to put this picture up [ and I've tried copy-paste, duplicating, editing, but nothing works] I have a lot of trouble.) Are you in league with the enemy on this one?

    Hey Justin,

I see what the problem is, but it might take me a while to fix it. I’m going to have to reinstall the avatar application, and re-upload the images into the database. Please be patient! :)

Wow! That was a close call. I respect spiders such as those and try to give them a wide berth.

“it was cool until one crawled up my arm” That’s so funny! Thats something we would say, “Hey guys look a black widow! Way cool! (Then discovers it on your arm) AHH!”

And Kasie said on Michaels blog that their trying to convince you to cut your hair … WE’RE here to convince you NOT to cut your hair. Long hair is better. Long hair rocks! Long hair keeps you warm in the winter. And as we all know winter is coming. So power to the people! And to hair! Long hair!
Oh, my sister says we must be politically correct so longER hair rocks! ; )

    @Thing1 and Thing2

Hehe, our friend “Mr. Darcy” would totally agree with you guys! :-) I’m not against longER hair on guys, but the case is different with our boys than with you all. Walter’s hair is REALLY thick and curly. Like, he could grow an afro if he wanted to (wouldn’t that look amusing!). And although Nate’s hair isn’t quite as extreme as his brother’s, it has a tendency to appear shaggy, especially when not combed.

That’s almost where we are right now; it’s starting to look a little shaggy and unkept, which is why Angie and I want to cut it! :-)

Just so long as you don’t grow it long like a girl’s, that’s cool with me. :-P

Thing 1 & Thing 2 – I agree with you, Even though I never really tried to grow my hair out that long. I should try that sometime just to see if it stays down or turns out to be an fro. I also want to gel my hair one of these days.

Kasie – I do not think my hair is looking shaggy! I think it looks quite dashing. :) If I do say so myself.

I’m going to have to fully support the long-hair crowd. Long hair is better, or at least 1 Corinthians 11:14-15 seems to say so.

Man, I am really looking forward to this movie. We watched a trailer for it a few months ago, it looks really exciting.

I will say, when I visited your site a few days ago, I thought you had stopped blogging, I was relieved to see you had just moved the link :-) . How did you do the scroll effect when the visitor changes the page?

Hey Joshua! (I have a feeling that you meant to comment on the Pendragon post, but no matter). :)

Yes, we changed our address to make way for our music band site!

With web design, I try to build on what others have done, and not re-invent the wheel so to speak. (Plus, I lack the javascript skills to create some of these fancy ajax effects).

First I found the wp-coda wordpress theme. Upon further searching, I stumbled upon wp-coda orange, which is what I ended up using. The included .psd and .css files were easy to edit to my tastes.

The theme uses jQuery, a popular javascript framework for the slider effects.

[...] This guy was actually quite photogenic :-) , and let me snap pictures to my heart’s desire. It was a much more comfortable setting than, say, photographing black widows! [...]
