Moments Before a Storm

September 8th, 2008

It may sound strange, but I love being outside right before a huge thunderstorm!

Dark clouds gather and engulf the sun…

…they sky is momentarily split between blue skies and storm clouds…

…and a quick artsy shot is taken before running inside. :-)

I just think it’s so beautiful!

The Adventure in an Upside-Down Mansion

Do we dare enter this odd building?

P1020067.JPG

We stand with trepidation in front of this place called “Wonder Works”. But knowing that today is “homeschool day”, and that our admission price is absurdly low… We suck up our courage and go for it!

What strange and wondrous things our eyes now see! Walter journeys into space…

While Kasie lies on a bed of nails. Hmmm…. She decided that it wasn’t that practical!

Ah, and here we have Nate trying to prove that he’s bigger, taller, and mightier than his elder brother. “A few years yet, me’lad…..”

The wonders of Wonder Works now over, we journey to a nearby mountain forest. You might have heard of it!

More Visiting With Family!

Last week we were blessed by a visit from family in Virginia. At last, we could start to repay the great favor they gave us in hosting us for 6 months!

Although their stay was short, we managed to squeeze in all the customary activities; namely, touring Providence Glen, and playing lots of games!

September Jobs

September 3rd, 2008

There’s a lot of work to be done this month! October’s going to be pretty busy, filled with a couple trips to VA, guests, a reenactment and more, so we decided to tend to these jobs now before the busyness starts.

We need to…

  • Prepare the Garden for Next Spring. We’re trying out a “no-till” method, where instead of turning the ground we pile hay about a foot high over the garden’s surface area. By next Spring it’ll have decomposed into its own soil, ready for planting. A little while ago we had our field “bush-hogged” (cut by a tough mower, basically), and Walter has already mowed the garden plot really short, since the grass underneath needs to be killed before we begin layering. So to save money, we’re currently gathering all the hay left by the bush-hogger. It’s hard and tedious work, but it’ll be worth it.
  • Stain the Front and Back Decks. Enough time has passed since our decks were built, so it’s time to stain them. Mom and I made a trip to Lowe’s last week and came home with 6 gallons of clear wood stain (that’d better be enough!). Nate and I stained our porches at our previous house, so we should be pretty set. It’s time to break out those holy jeans and old shirts and get to work!
  • Begin and Finish Sewing Antebellum Dress. Okay I admit, this one is just a personal goal of mine…but it is important that my dress is ready before the second weekend in October – there’s a Civil War reenactment to attend! I don’t think we’ll be apart of the actual reenacting, but it’s neat to go in costume anyway. :-) Angie and I have brainstormed together, planning and drawing pictures of what it’ll look like, but seeing as I have yet to cut and sew, I have a lot of work to do!
  • Weedwack All Trails. Easier said than done. A simple but time consuming task. This one’s not as important to finish right as soon as the others on our list, but I would like to get it all done before things pick up in October! Even though the grass was recently cut, it still isn’t incredibly short (probably about a foot tall), and soon we’ll be wanting those paths again. :-)

I guess I’d best hop to it then! So, y’all got any jobs needin’ to be a’getting dun this month? (I’m practicing some of my southern drawl)

:-D

Upon a Misted Morning

September 1st, 2008

I looked out our bedroom window one morning last week, and saw this!

Isn’t it pretty? Most of the mist had lifted by the time I took these pictures, but with the sun rising behind it I think it looks beautiful. :-)

Happy September everyone!
