All is Ready…

October 31st, 2008

We worked hard last week putting the fence up…

…the electric rope is in fine, working condition…

…now all is ready for the horses!

No, they’re not our horses. However, when our friends from church needed a place to board their two horses, we suggested that they be kept here at Providence Glen. And as I’m sure you’ve already surmised at this point, they agreed!

Those of our readers who know mine and Angie’s love for horses can imagine how excited we are! I haven’t been horseback riding since we moved from N.Y., but in just a few weeks we’ll be able to ride “Harley” and “Kristi” whenever we wish! The horses won’t be here forever, since our friends are in the middle of moving out of state. But even so, isn’t that simply awesome?

Keep a look out for future posts concerning the subject!

Friend

October 30th, 2008

“Henceforth I do not call you servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”

~John 15:15

Have you ever read a passage in the Bible that jumps out at you in a way that it never had in the past?

That’s what happened to me, as I pondered this verse not long ago. I’ve read this portion of scripture many times before, but never had I seen it in such light as this!

“…I have called you friends.”

He has called me friend. Me! The One, True God who crafted the universe and died on the cross for my sins is my Friend. WOW!

I’ll close with a few lines from the song “Friend of God” (written by Michael Gungor and Israel Houghton).

Who am I that You are mindful of me, that you hear me when I call

Is it true that you are thinking of me, of how you love me?

It’s amazing!

I am a friend of God – He calls me friend!

May God bless your day!

Another enjoyable performance …

October 28th, 2008

Another enjoyable performance at the Assisted Living Center. Really nice folks there!

By the Fireplace

October 28th, 2008

We never owned an indoor fireplace until we moved here, into our new house. Recently we had it changed from a wood to a gas fireplace, and now with the cold months settling in, we can finally put it to use! It turns off and on by itself, depending on what the temperature is inside.

There’s nothing quite like warming yourself by the fire after a chilly day outside! Now I can do that everyday. :-)

Happenings

October 25th, 2008

I love happenings! Though it is often hard to be up on blogging them all, because there are so many. It seems that soon after we truly settled at Providence Glen, our once empty calender rapidly developed into highly-penciled days and weeks. Poor un-socialized home schoolers that we are…;-)

We’ve been able to visit Virginia two weekends this month. Before the birthday bonanza, we took a trip up to watch our nieces and nephews, and we also visited friends from the VA ball. They had persuaded us to go to a late night showing of Fireproof. The movie was well worth the five hours of sleep we got that night!

Before the reenactment came around, my free time consisted of sewing the boys’ vests, cravats, and trousers. I was so thankful I didn’t have to make myself a whole other costume. We were really blessed to find accessories like hats and shoes at our local thrift stores.

And we’ve been working on our CD. The album recordings are scheduled in the next month, so in the meantime we are working out arrangements and revising our songs if need be. We are planning to play for the folk at Wellington Place every other week or so. We pray that they will be touched and uplifted by our music.

A happening that I am excited about, is my debut next week reenacting as a slave girl in the Williams-Dickson mansion.  This opportunity is such an unexpected blessing that still blows my mind! A girl from church had recommended me to the mansion’s educational director. He need an African American girl my age to reenact for school field trips at the mansion. With my parents’ full blessing, I took the job, and began memorizing the script of “Milly”‘s story right away.

Pictures of the mansion and my outfit coming next week!

I shall end this post with these verses from Psalm 37:3-5.

“Trust in the Lord, and do good, so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.”

A Birthday Bonanza

October 24th, 2008

Last weekend we were once more in Virginia visiting family, and to attend a new special occasion – a “birthday bonanza”  for my nieces and nephews!

My brother and his wife have 7 children, all of who’s birthdays are scattered throughout the year. For this time around they decided to celebrate all their birthdays in one day, invite lots of friends, bring lots of food and host a rolled-into-one birthday bash.

The experiment was a success! It was well received, well attended, and everyone had a blast! The party happened on the coldest day we’ve had in the season thus far, but we kept ourselves warm playing football, volleyball, frisbe, and other brisk activities. :-) We stayed the night on Saturday, went to church on Sunday, and returned home that afternoon. It was wonderful to spend time with family and see friends again!

Here are some pictures from our trip:

Have a jolly weekend!

Ye Olde English

October 23rd, 2008

Don’t you just love old-fashioned words? I’m sure our Jamestown Hunt friends will agree with us! Participating in the Treasure Hunt last year improved my Old English reading comprehension. (Or more correctly, late Middle English. Old English is what you will find in Beowulf) I’ve had so much fun using old words to liven up my narratives or poems.

Here’s is a list of words that I’ve gathered which can certainly attribute to the “grand” factor if you happen to wish that for your writing.

“Forsooth” = in truth or indeed

“Gramercy” = Many thanks

“Anon” = referring to a specific time

“Forthwith” = soon

“Sirrah” = A term for a man of the lower class. Or for anybody that ruffles your feathers!

“Palfrey” = A woman’s saddle horse

“To wit” = That is to say…

“Perchance” = Perhaps

“Hence” = Away (get thee hence)

“Thereto” = In addition to that

“Astonied” = Astonished, stunned

“Assay” = Try

“Fain” = gladly

Of course, don’t try to pack them all into one sentence! You might end up with something incomprehensible like mine. :-D

“Unhand thou my palfrey’s harness sirrah, get thee hence…” and forthwith the astonied damsel assayed to scream, for perchance there wert a knight-errant close by, to wit, a knight in shining armor who would fain save her.

Jamming With Friends

There is nothing quite so wonderful…

…as worshipping God with our brothers and sisters in Him. :-)

Civil War Weekend

October 15th, 2008

The Battle of Blue Springs: a battle fought during the Civil War, and one that’s reenacted every year in October. There’s an education day for school kids, a ball…

Hold it! Did you say a ball? I’m in! :-)

The Civil War ball is what first caught our attention (some of our readers remember the reenactment we attended in VA, and on another occasion a Vintage Ball). But the ball is open only to reenactors. We had to fix that somehow…

Our homeschool leader, a long time Civil War reenactor, gave us and the rest of the group a crash course on what everyone needs to know about reenacting. After a few weeks preparation, everything was officially set – we would be reenactors (along with fellow our homeschoolers), and we were going to the ball!

We invited our friend Emily to join us for the occasion, which added greatly to our enjoyment those few days. We talked and played games in between meals and driving to Blue Springs, and even watched a bit of Spiderman3 at an indecent hour of night. :-) Ah, what fun we had together!

So here is a batch of pictures from the first day of the reenactment, “Education Day.”

Saturday morning found us girls bustling about all the bedrooms in the house; “Have you seen my snood?” “No, I thought you put it on the windowsill. Where’d you put my hat?” “It’s in the closet. Em, can you tie my bow please?” “Sure. Kase, is my skirt covering the hoop?” “Oh, there’s my snood!” “Careful not to trip over my dress please…”

:-D

Over in the boys’ quarters, Walter couldn’t decide if it was better to wear a cravat or not, and Nate declared that he looked like a monkey in his costume! But it is my opinion that, in the end, we all looked super. Don’t you agree?

My favorite part of the entire weekend was the ball. During the reenactment we walked all about the sutlery isle and both camps, and got our pictures taken more times than I can count. But nothing compares to the vigor and excitement that took place Saturday evening at the ball!

And can you guess who we saw there, amidst all the Union and Confederate soldiers and Southern Belles? Captain Jack Sparrow, from Pirates of the Carribean! No, ’twas not Johnny Depp, but there was a man there who was just like Jack in his dress, voice, and mannerisms.

Complete and absolute randomness, right? But I have to admit, Jack Sparrow added more fun to everything we did and danced, and was the life of the party!

I know, we should have taken more pictures. But see, that’s how much fun we were having! We were so busy dancing, talking and laughing we didn’t have time to think about our camera.

At any rate, it certainly was a weekend to remember. It was wonderful having Emily over; reenacting for the first time was a neat experience, and I loved the ball!

A Civil War Time Warp?

More to come soon…
