Outer Banks #6: Canoe Views

October 10th, 2009

Since the ocean looked a little rough for canoing (but apparently not for some people!) we turned to a different water trip more suited to our canoes, Milltail Creek into Alligator River. It was a gorgeous day, and the water was amazing! I described it to Walter as “clear, black tea”, and he agreed. It made for beautiful reflections!

See what I mean?

“Only one way to go now – forward.”

We have reached the Alligator River!

We stayed only for a little while, then turned around to head back.

It’s a camp story all the counselors told the kids at the camp we played at this summer. We were on a hayride on our way back from the campfire by the river…

(Crazy) Bob fought in the Vietnam War, but he suffered severely from post traumatic stress disorder. He lived like a hermit in an old creepy house; sometimes, he would imagine he was back in the war, and that’s why they called him “Crazy Bob”.

One day, a few years ago, one little girl wandered from the safety of the creekside campfire without notifying anyone. It just so happened that Crazy Bob was experiencing one of his…er…you know what that he found the poor girl, imagined she was the enemy, and tied her to a tree. The camp staff and counselors couldn’t find her for two days! She was never the same.

And THAT, is why you never wander around where you’re not suppose to. (see? this story has a moral!) And it was also at this point that the hayride stopped in front of the broken down house and a couple of (hidden) camp staff jumped out the windows with flashlights to scare us. It was hilarious! It was so funny to watch the looks on some of the kids’ faces!

Anyways, that’s the long story to explain our little inside joke. When we saw that boathouse when we were canoing, it reminded us of “Crazy Bob’s” house, so that’s what we dubbed it. :-D
