Introducing – WilliTech

November 13th, 2009

It’s called WilliTech – and it’s the un-interesting name for a really cool series of posts from me (Walter), the official geek of The Willi.

I’ll probably start off by highlighting some of my favorite (free) programs that make life easier on the computer, and then might even branch off into tech tips or tutorials. These posts might be long – or they might be really short. They might come quickly, or be separated by weeks or even months. I’ll be sure to keep you guessing. :)

So let’s get started!

WilliTech #1: View and edit images quickly with Irfanview

Irfanview is 2nd piece of software that I download on any new computer (right after getting a decent browser). It’s hard for me to imagine life on a Windows PC without it.

irfanview

What is Irfanview? Here’s a quote from the program’s website:

“IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer.”

Why I like Irfanview:

  • It’s fast. Lightning fast. Think, “faster than notepad” fast. When I want to view an image, I don’t want to have to wait for “Vista picture viewer”, or Photoshop to load
  • Keyboard shortcuts. View other images in the folder using the arrow keys. Go fullscreen instantly with “enter”. Rotate right or left with “r” and “l”. Ctr+r to resize. I could go on and on….
  • Once you install the plugin pack, Irfanview will open anything you throw at it. Png, jpegs, photoshop files, and dozens of obscure image formats that you’ve never heard of. And then if you get bored, you can also use Irfanview to open WAV and MP3 music files, videos, and even PDFs.
  • Batch processing. If there’s one thing that computers should be good at, it’s repetitive tasks. And yet we sit there doing the same thing over and over again “saving time” on the computer. Batch processing let’s the computer do all the work for you.
Say you have a bunch of pictures from your 7 megapixel camera that you want to upload to your flickr – but you want to resize them first to something more web-friendly, say 800×600. With irfanview, this is no problem. Use the “Batch conversion/rename” function to resize as many images as you want, all at once. Job done.

So do yourself a favor – get Irfanview. It’s not glitzy or snazzy by any means, but you won’t find anything faster or more effective for Windows [7, Vista, XP, 98, 95].

Here there be comments...

Well Walter, you have convinced me to give Irfanview a shot! I need an application that will display .psd images in Linux. Do you always use Windows?

Sadly, Irfanview is Windows only – though I’ve heard that it runs almost flawlessly on WINE.

I am obliged to use Windows (Vista) for my day to day computing. I have to use Internet Explorer for work…. :(

The desktop that the rest of the family uses is running Ubuntu 9.10 – a thing of beauty. But windows isn’t all bad… For instance, I’ve yet to find a linux application that’s as good as Irfanview!

For psd files, I assume you’re already familiar with GIMP, a worthy photoshop replacement that works well in linux. If you’re looking for a psd viewer (and not an editor), see if you can get your built-in image viewer to work – perhaps there’s some plugins you can install.

    You on Gnome? KDE?

There’s a Irfanview “copy-cat” for linux called xnview – you might want to check that out as well. I think it does psd files…

I have only been using Linux for a few months, so far I like it a lot!

How do you like Ubuntu 9.10? I tried Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04?) a bit when I was deciding which distribution to use. Mainly, I like the efficiency and freedom of Linux.

I have used GIMP a little, it has taken me some getting used to. I have looked and looked and looked for a native Linux image viewer that can display .psds, or a file browser with .psd thumbnail support. So far the best I have been able to find is Thunar (which is slow for large images), and Picasa (which eats my CPU).

I am using Gnome on Fedora 11, looking forward to 12!

I will check out Xnview also, thank you!

You’re welcome! Hope you find a good solution.

Fedora is a very good distro. It’s generally more cutting edge then Ubuntu, and is being developed at a furious pace.

Irfanview under Wine is the best thing I have found yet!

Do you have a preference between Gnome and KDE? So far I like Gnome (with a custom theme I made), but I have heard that KDE is better…

Sorry to keep bothering you, but I don’t know a lot of people who are willing to talk much about Linux. ;-)

Hey great job! I’m loving the new idea … getting a heads up in computer technology.
    Looking forward to more!

    @jt400
I don’t have much experience in KDE at all, so I can’t really say! :) Supposedly KDE is more advanced than Gnome, and their latest release (4.3) rivals Gnome in stability. So I’d say that KDE has the edge right now…

But I haven’t found a good enough reason to switch.

    @Mathew Thomas
    Thanks!
