Introducing – WilliTech

November 13th, 2009

It’s called WilliTech – and it’s the un-interesting name for a really cool series of posts from me (Walter), the official geek of The Willi.

I’ll probably start off by highlighting some of my favorite (free) programs that make life easier on the computer, and then might even branch off into tech tips or tutorials. These posts might be long – or they might be really short. They might come quickly, or be separated by weeks or even months. I’ll be sure to keep you guessing. :)

So let’s get started!

WilliTech #1: View and edit images quickly with Irfanview

Irfanview is 2nd piece of software that I download on any new computer (right after getting a decent browser). It’s hard for me to imagine life on a Windows PC without it.

irfanview

What is Irfanview? Here’s a quote from the program’s website:

“IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer.”

Why I like Irfanview:

  • It’s fast. Lightning fast. Think, “faster than notepad” fast. When I want to view an image, I don’t want to have to wait for “Vista picture viewer”, or Photoshop to load
  • Keyboard shortcuts. View other images in the folder using the arrow keys. Go fullscreen instantly with “enter”. Rotate right or left with “r” and “l”. Ctr+r to resize. I could go on and on….
  • Once you install the plugin pack, Irfanview will open anything you throw at it. Png, jpegs, photoshop files, and dozens of obscure image formats that you’ve never heard of. And then if you get bored, you can also use Irfanview to open WAV and MP3 music files, videos, and even PDFs.
  • Batch processing. If there’s one thing that computers should be good at, it’s repetitive tasks. And yet we sit there doing the same thing over and over again “saving time” on the computer. Batch processing let’s the computer do all the work for you.
Say you have a bunch of pictures from your 7 megapixel camera that you want to upload to your flickr – but you want to resize them first to something more web-friendly, say 800×600. With irfanview, this is no problem. Use the “Batch conversion/rename” function to resize as many images as you want, all at once. Job done.

So do yourself a favor – get Irfanview. It’s not glitzy or snazzy by any means, but you won’t find anything faster or more effective for Windows [7, Vista, XP, 98, 95].

I’m Back!

August 23rd, 2009

itsme

Whew! I’ve just returned from a two-week trip up north with Mom, Angie and Nate – We had a blast of a time, but are glad to be back. We were kept quite busy visiting with family and friends, delivering babies (go Mom!), driving by our old home… ah!

Don’t worry, pictures and stories of our adventures are coming up ! Boy have I got a lot of sorting to do… :-)

Stay tuned!

Coming Up

June 11th, 2009

Hello all! This is just a note to say “hey” and that there will be posting on this blog soon. :-) Things have been busy around here!

Last night we returned from a camping trip in Kentucky, had a great time and lots of adventures, so look for pictures and tales of that! Nate and I played a couple of intense games of Ultimate Frisbee tonight (something we usually do weekly), so I’m rather wiped now. Now that I’ve relaxed a while, watched Dick Van Dyke with family, I’m totally ready for bed. Boy, will I sleep well tonight!

Goodnight everyone! I’ll most likely be posting sometime this weekend.

Thanks For Voting!

November 28th, 2008

Thanks for voting for the Chronicles of the Willi in the Homeschool Blog awards! We rang in with a respectable 2nd place finish.

Our congratulations to the winner of our category, Feelin’ Feminine! In all honesty, they deserved to win. (And with over double our readership, it’s no wonder that they did!) :D

Vote For Our Blog!

November 12th, 2008

Well, I just learned a few minutes ago that we’ve been nominated for the Best Teen Group Blog of 2008! And not only that, but the voting for the best blog has been going on for the past 2-3 days!

If I wasn’t clued in on another forum, the contest would have come and gone without us even knowing. :)

Even though we don’t know who nominated us, and we’re probably not in the best category (teen group?), we still think it would be cool to get some votes!

So here it is – the polling page where you can vote for Chronicles of the Willi.

+ Click Here to Vote +

Let’s see how high on the results list we can get!

While you’re at it, it’s worth visiting around at the other voting categories. They are filled with great blogs, some of which we read on a daily basis.

Autumn Glory

November 7th, 2008

Here’s what Providence Glen looks like in Autumn. Autumn colors come a lot slower for us in Tennessee, but they are well worth the wait!

The Willi on Twitter

October 8th, 2008

For those of you who know what twitter is, I set up a twitter feed for our band, The Willi.

+ The Willi Twitter Page +
(Subscribe to the RSS feed by clicking the “RSS” button on the bottom-left of the page)

It’s main purpose is to provide updates for the band site, thewilli.com. (Check it out – it’s already embedded into the site). I might even integrate the twitter feed directly into this blog, and have the blog software automatically post our “tweets”.

We’ve Been Tagged!

October 1st, 2008

Our blogging friend Camille has tagged us, and now it’s our turn to tag others!

Here’s the rules for those we’re tagging. Check the list after our 6 THINGS to see if you’re it then

  1. Link to the person who tagged you.
  2. Post the rules on your blog.
  3. Write six random things about yourself.
  4. Tag sixish people at the end of your post.
  5. Let each person know he or she has been tagged.
  6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

Now for Six Random things about us:

Hey, there’s 6 of us – one random thing per person!

  1. Not least among Nate’s ambitions is growing taller than Walter.
  2. Kasie wrote her first song at age 10.
  3. Angie used to like her oatmeal thick and goopy.
  4. Walter is not a very interesting person (inside joke).
  5. Mom LOVES those little wooden “cats meow” figures.
  6. And Dad literally got saved through street evangelism!

OK, we are tagging “six-ish” people!
