One Year of Blogging

September 28th, 2008

It’s our “Bloggaversary”! :-)

Where has the time gone? Can it really have been an entire year since we began our family blog?

A good many things have taken place since the 28th of September 2007, the most obvious one being that we moved! (hopefully everybody knows that already…) :-) After a 7 month ‘stop’ in Virginia, our home is now in Providence Glen, East Tennessee.

And now, as of a few weeks ago, we’ve decided to step out in faith with a music ministry! Our band site is set up, we’ll be playing at nursing homes and churches, and we’re cutting a CD! God has blessed us with friends and connections to help us in this endeavor. May He receive all glory!

Throughout all of this it’s been a great joy to be able to share our lives through pictures and stories with you, our dear friends and readers. Hearing from you through all your comments is what makes blogging fun. So…thank you all very much!

Here are a few ‘blog stats’ for you to enjoy:

Number of posts in one year: 223 (including this one)

Total number of comments in one year: 2,237

Post with the most coments in one year: Happy New Year! with a total of 40 comments!

Here’s to the beginning of another year of blogging for the Willi!

Reclaiming the Culture

June 28th, 2008

Well everyone, I know that we promised a “fresh contest” for you all, but sometimes God has other plans. Being “offline” for the past month, we’ve been unable to plan out anything exciting. But we’re still not about to let a contest opportunity (be it ever so commonplace) go to waste!

So, without further ado, we’d like to introduce to y’all the Reclaiming the Culture DVD series! (Did you catch that “y’all”? I’ll be a Suth’ner yet…)

I’ve noticed that when it comes to culture, Christians usually fall into 3 basic camps. First, there are those who allow themselves to be transformed by the world’s culture. Second, there are those who (for lack of a better term), “run away and hide” from the culture, and live in isolation with no influence on society. And then, finally, there are those who make it their business to neither hide from the world nor compromise the scriptures – but to instead reclaim the culture.

Our family strives to be in that latter category. The question then is, “how”? “Where do we start?”

That’s what the Reclaiming the Culture DVD series from Vision Forum is all about. It’s sort of a compilation of some of the best teachings available at Vision Forum – teachings that can transform your family. Although we haven’t watched these DVDs yet, we’ve listened to half of the talks via audio CDs – and they are of the highest quality. We were actually there LIVE in Jamestown when the Providential Nexus of Jamestown and Plymouth was filmed!

So, where’s the contest, you ask? Well, here it is. Leave us a comment, and in the comment, put a practical way we can all help reclaim the culture for Christ. The names of everyone who leaves a culture changing suggestion will be entered into a hat, and then a winner will be randomly chosen. The winner gets to choose any one of the DVDs of the entire collection!

Go ahead, browse through the titles – they’re good. We just listened to The Promise the other day. It was excellent!

To start us off in the comments, I’ll leave a small, practical way we can change the culture – Hospitality. Specifically, inviting people that might even be near strangers to you for dinner and such. Let them see in your family the difference of the Biblical family, and let God have the glory!

Oh, by the way, I am obliged by Vision Forum to end this giveaway no later than June 30th – so you better get your comment in before the end of Monday!

You Make My Day!

May 30th, 2008

Kaysie from Alabastar Box recently awarded me with the “You Make My Day” blog award! Thanks Kaysie! Now we’re to pass on the award to six others…

you make my day

There Is a Season – Camille and family. We enjoy and appreciate all your comments here, and reading what you guys are up to on your blog, and of course, all of your fun contests. :-)

The Thomases You guys are great! We are blessed to be able to follow your lives through pictures on your blog; every week our whole family looks forward to reading a new update. Michael, your photography is beautiful!

The Nisbett Family – more of our friends from the Jamestown 400! It’s wonderful that we’re to be able to keep in touch with each other through our blogs. We especially liked seeing pictures from the many plays you’ve done!

Valiant For Truth – Andrew Higginbotham. (I still think that name is awesome by the way!) Again, it’s a blessing to keep in touch with you and your family through blogging. Keep proclaiming the truth, Sir Valiant!

Anna and Miriam at Maidens of Worth – You may not know this, but I’ve been reading your blog almost since the beginning, a few years ago now. Your passion for the Lord and love for your families is beautiful, and I enjoy your blog so much!

Ella and Erin at ModesTeen – I’ve been greatly blessed by reading your blog. Thanks for sharing insights and lessons learned, and for encouraging young ladies in modesty, character, and purity. And Ella, you’re doing great with your series on Jane Austin heroes. :-)

Now, if you’ve been nominated, your job is to award six others in the blogging world who have made your day. Got it?

Thank you everyone for blessing us so much!

-Kasie

P.S. We did have another blog or 2 that we thought about nominating (hello, Esther), but didn’t know if they would appreciate the “publicity”. :)

This is So Cool…

This web image viewer is so cool!

A Cosmetic Update

May 15th, 2008

Note from the Admin:

In general, the Willi like change – you guys should know that by now. :) Seeing our faces staring back at us every day on the blog was getting a little old – so I decided to “shake it up a little”. Out came Photoshop (thanks Brian), some free stock photography, and Voila! Maybe not a great work of art, but at least it refreshes the visual palette.

Here’s how to see the changes:

Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + r

Internet Explorer: Ctrl + F5

P.S. No, there aren’t any clues in the image, or anything intelligible written in the background… :) We are however, planning out a final installment of the Story of the Land.

Some Tech Issues

April 7th, 2008

Hey folks, it appears we’re having (or had, rather) some technical issues regarding the blog. If you are having any trouble accessing TheWilli.com, or had trouble earlier, please let me know in the comments or via an email.

I think the problem is resolved, but we might not be “out of the woods yet”! Thank you for your patience and understanding.

- The Admin (aka Walter)

UPDATE: It seems that my older brother (the “super admin”) has added another layer of security to his server. This security software was erroneously flagging many of our readers as “bad guys”, and then banning their IP addresses completely.

We hope that this issue is now resolved – but we’re not completely sure. So if you are continuing to have any problems, please let me know! Thanks.

Some New Features

January 20th, 2008

admin2
This is just a quick little note to bring to your attention a few new features of TheWilli.com – features that I hope will enhance the overall user experience :) .

First off, I’ve installed a handy little plugin that allows you subscribe to comments via email. Considering the conversational tendency of some of our readers (see New Year’s Eve for an extreme example), this might be helpful. To subscribe, simply check the box when you make a new comment! The blog will then email you follow-up comments to the email address that you entered.

Note: This is not a license to start filling the comments with useless babble – I have a delete button, and I’m not afraid to use it! :D

Secondly, we now have a “post popularity” system. It determines how popular each of the posts are by # of comments, # of permalink views, # of feed views, # of pingbacks, and many other factors. Each post is given a percentage, which tells you how popular that post in comparison to the highest rated post. It’s going to take several weeks for the program to accumulate click data and such, but for now, the list on the sidebar will have to do.

What does this new “post popularity” mean for you? Nothing! It’s just something that I thought was really cool. :)

God bless, and have a geek (uh, I mean great) week!
Walter

Fashionable girls

January 8th, 2008

As many of you have noticed in Kasie’s post, she was wearing one of those “Rebecca St. James/totally British/bee-bop caps” that she and I have (figuratively) been drooling over for months

To say that they are cool are an understatement.

They are totally and truely awesome!

The first time I remember seeing “those cool hats” for sale was in Boston Massachusetts, at the market across Fanuel Hall. I tried on various lovely hats, and would have bought one if it weren’t for the intimidating price of 30 + bucks! After vigorous research online I found out that the said cap was called a Newsboy Cap. Has anyone seen the Newsies? :-) That helps me remember the name…

I pondered if I should buy a cap from ebay, but if I went that route I wouldn’t be able to see what it looked like on me… And so far (as our physical search entailed) we hadn’t seen any other Newsboy Caps for sale!

On our way back from Tennessee last week, we paused to visit the only KHOLS for miles around. I wandered around the store pausing at the clearance racks only ;-) and eventually found myself in the hat and scarf section. I amused myself by trying on different “bucket hats” (Kasie knows what I mean) then was amazed to spot out of the corner of my eye, an entire row of newsboy caps!

AND… as my thrifty eyes spotted a bargain…they happened to be on sale! Praise God!

As they say the rest is history.

I picked a sweet camel color with some gold-ish feminine elements. It goes with just about anything!

Well there’s my first post of the new year! I know I’m the slow poke of the Willi, but one of my New Years resolutions is to write at least one post a week. Sure go ahead and bug me if I don’t :-)

And The Winner Is….

December 19th, 2007

Miriam Rainwater!

Congratulations Miriam! It is a well written limerick indeed – and proof that the JT400 lives on in our hearts and minds.

As the winner of our contest, Miriam gets to choose between two Vision Forum products. Enjoy, Miriam!

We’d like to thank the Vision Forum for making this giveaway possible. Quite frankly, it’s fun to give away someone else’s product without any personal expense! :D

Seriously though, it’s been a blast, and we hope you all had fun! I know WE all had fun reading all your entertaining entries!
